Amos Oz - R3 Free Thinking Festival

An eloquent and witty talk by Amos Oz broadcast last night as part of the R3 Free Thinking Festival. Even if it was a talk in which Oz could be said to be ploughing old ground, it contained much uncommon sense. The broadcast was slightly spoilt for me by Philip Dodd monopolising the questions afterwards, but what Oz had to say was always interesting, a powerful plea for compromise and reason against rigidity and fanaticism.

I think Oz understates the sheer inequality (in strength) of the Israelis and Palestinians, or seems not to believe that that is significant in the way any peace process would move forward. And perhaps he also downplays the extent to which the forces of no-compromise heavily outweigh those of compromise - at least at present. But the case he presented seemed compelling to me.

I heard the latter part of this driving home from a concert. It was marvellous. Oz was thoughtful, eloquent and entertaining, and I found his views compelling.
