    Digital Sources for R3

Now that the HD transmissions have been going a while, what are the relative merits of the various digital sources for Radio 3? There seems to be a lot of them: HD, iPhone mp3, iPlayer aac, Freeview mp2, DAB and probably some I don't know about.

Sky+ is efficient and a good way to record programmes. (I use it most Saturday mornings.)

But for serious listening I always return to my FM Tuner.

For casual listening, or when out and about on foot or in the car, FM is my choice. However, it's not realy up to to serious listening, well not compared to the new "HD sound" option, or even the 192kbps on demand version of the iPlayer. Between the various mp2 options (DAB, Freeview south of the Scotish border, and satellite) I don't find much in it (except when the data rate drops to 160kbps on DAB) and on the whole prefer the sound to that of FM due to the increase in dynamic range. The dynamic compression used for FM makes if fine for in car use, but distorts the music too much for serious listening, I find.
