Beethoven or Bartok - Who comes first ?

There was a time when almost all musical works were played in date order, not so now. Today Lunchtime recital we had Bartok followed by Beethoven - does that suit everyone ?

To some people this is like having a sweetie to help remove the after taste of some nasty medicine !

Well, fwiw, on this occasion i thought it worked just fine.

But i was in the car, working, so critical levels probably a bit low . I suppose the brevity of the Bartok made it a more natural opener.

All depends on the works in the programme?

I remember preparing my recital for my finals in 1972. I started with Handel, followed by Mozart, Martinu and Liszt, but piano teacher had tried to persuade me that it was correct to play the music in chronological order. Always the argumentative one, I referred to one of his recitals which was not in chronological order. He replied that there was a difference between a recital and a concert, and his had been a concert. I'm still unsure about this one.

Could be the xenakis of death for some composers.
