    Ariadne auf Naxos at Longborough

To Longborough for the first night of Ariadne auf Naxos, last seen by me 21 years ago in Sydney. It's an opera whose music I love, but until last night's vivid and lucid production by Alan Privett, I had never made head nor tail of dramatically.

Superb cast, led by the dazzling Helena Dix in the title role. South Yarra's finest! Longborough's pick-up band in fine form under Anthony Negus, truly the maestro.

    Thanks Veri

We're going on the 21st. Yours and other reviews make it seem magnificent, though I'd expect no less from Longborough.

I, too, last saw it years ago at ENO with Donald Sinden as the Major-Domo, and I remember it as a great evening. I can date it to 1997 via Google because the next morning I saw Sinden had been knighted. Memorable because of an unkind Private Eye spoof pretending he'd been lobbying for a knighthood for years.
