    Thanks Rob!

two prime nuggets this week ... Nuages by Django and Caravan by Brubeck, neither the obvious choice, the Django was a 1953 electric guitar version, and the Brubeck a 1979 quartet with Jerry Bergonzi on tenor sax ....

what happened to the smiley panel?

      Who read it ... ?

Which one? I have a Penguin Borges ed. with some of the works - must look it out.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

          it was this one ff

Faint-hearted king, sly bishop, ruthless queen,
Straightforward castle, and deceitful pawn -
Over the checkered black and white terrain
They seek out and begin their armed campaign.

They do not know it is the player’s hand
That dominates and guides their destiny.
They do not know an adamantine fate
Controls their will and lays the battle plan.

The player too is captive of caprice
(The words are Omar’s) on another ground
Where black nights alternate with whiter days.

God moves the players, he in turn the piece.
But what god beyond God begins the round
Of dust and time and sleep and agonies?

Heh, heh! Am I right in thinking that R3 has some sort of chess programming coming up soon ... ?

Love that quote from Pierre Ménard, author of the Quixote, where PM writes a learned article about an innovation to the game of chess, where (approximate details here) one rook is replaced by a pawn. In the article PM proposes, discusses and finally rejects the change ...
