BaL 11.11.23 - Dvorak: Symphony no.9 in E minor "From the New World"

    10.15 am
Katy Hamilton chooses her favourite recording of Antonín Dvorák’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 “From the New World”.

With its beguiling blend of spontaneous-sounding and memorable American- and Bohemian-inspired folk-like melodies, nostalgia and drama, Dvorák’s “New World” Symphony is perhaps one of the best-known works in the symphonic repertoire and certainly one of the most recorded. Undaunted, Katy Hamilton has found her favourite recording.

BPO/Kubelik and LPO/Macal here; I agree with the 'cracking' comment.

And because Alison will be on tenterhooks:

The BBC MM release is Vol 20, No 12: BBCSSO/Runnicles
Recorded live at the Usher Hall on 28 August 2010 (Edinburgh Festival)

Which has remained available in various formats, including on YouTube:

Still very much worth a listen.

              Thanks again Mr Pulcers.

Had forumistas noticed the passing of Mr Mácal only last Wednesday?

No, sadly this appears to have gone under the radar (no mention on Presto which is usually good with reporting deaths of well-known artists.

I have the Fischer New World recording and am happy with this. Earlier recordings usually omit the first movement repeat, which makes them non-starters for me (I know several of you will disagree).

I do have to complain yet again that BAL seems increasingly to concentrate on standard repertory works by name composers. I would have preferred to hear one on the Violin Concerto, Symphonies 5 or 6 or the Requiem as far as Dvorak is concerned. Is any member of the production team listening, or is this at the command of a Controller who moved from Classic FM?

I have multiple recordings, between the ones actively purchased and the ones included in various big box sets. Szell/Cleveland my go to, Ancerl/Czech PO probably the second most played in recent years

There's an obituary for Mácal on the Gramophone site that kicks off with mention of the CfP New World:

Sad news - also of course conducted the Czech PO on the Anja Thauer recording of the Dvorak Cello Concerto.

According to Presto the LPO Dvorak 9 is still available as a download.

I was brought up with Leopold Ludwig on World Record Club but it never fired my imagination then I bought Toscanini and that did. I now have several highly regarded versions but it's the Dohnányi Cleveland version that wins my personal BaL.

Wiener Philharmoniker, Kirill Kondrashin - my personal top choice over the years
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
