    That's a good list EA.

Just one addition that I can think of:

Schreier, Peter Damm, Slovak Chamber Orchestra / Bohdan Warchal on CAMPION (thanks MDT)

I love it for Schreier's idiosyncratic 'Dyin-k, dyin-k, dyin--k', so for that reason alone it will not survive long in the choosing

EDIT: there must be more than one version by Robert Tear, surely - Stuart Bedford conducted one I think - Marriner??

Tear, Civil & Marriner, EMI recording still available at bargain price, once of the later Robert Tear's finest recordings IMO.

We have the thorny question of availability again, maybe, but surely consideration must be given to Pears/Brain/Britten (with the Boyd Neel Orchestra, 1944).

It has been on CDs from Decca (available from some Amazon vendors for about £23 new, £10 s/h) and Pearl.

[Also available as a download from napster, I see]

Essential listening for Tear's truly terrifying 'Dirge' alone IMO.

Pears-Tuckwell-Britten will surely be hard to get past?

No - it needs a Brain.

                    Personally, I don't give a Damm

(One for European horn fanciers there )
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

If we carry on like this, it will be Tears before bedtime. (Incidentally, I didn't know that Alan Partridge had recorded the Serenade - A-Haa!)

I don't think the "Hirst, Kuyper, Klein" version is available in the UK, but I've added the other suggestions to the list.

Incidentally, is Peter Damm as wobbly as he is on his concerto recordings?
