That Fedoseyev was a helluvan ear-opener, wasn't it?! Those trumpets!

          Crikey, not arf

Not a piece I've ever warmed to for some reason, (possibly because the only recording I have is on a Rattle/Britten compilation ). But I got a lot out of this BAL, and perhaps I need to add the chosen version - and Fedoseyev
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I've had that compilation for years, and I think Ms Jeal was spot on in her criticism of it. Like many of Rattle's recordings, it seems very studio-bound: there's nothing "wrong" with it, but it lacks that extra 1 - 2% of heat that the Music needs (the Fedoseyev is positively flambé-ed!) - and which was instantly shown to be lacking with the very next extract she played, which needed oven gloves in comparison.

              I'd say that too! Blimey!

No-one, as far as I am am aware, has anyone mentioned Vernon Handley's recording? Although not on the list.

That's what I thought, then I thought "I wonder if it would stand up to repeated listenings?" Sometimes I think there is the 'novelty' factor at work. Britten's own New Philharmonia recording absolutely nails it, for me, - as do many of his recordings of his own work. One of very few coposers who can achieve this.

The only Britten mentuioned on Tod's discography is the Sea Interludes and Passacaglia from Peter Grimes.

Didn't Ms Jeal cause a middle ranking uproar on the forum with her maiden Sibelius 2 BAL?

A much more confident performance yesterday I suggest.

I seem to remember that! However, for the life of me I can't remember what her library choice was? (Two soups, that's right.....)

Colin Davis/LSO: a pretty uncontroversial choice, I'd've thought.

Lightly dismissed backbones of the catalogue rather than final choice I think .....
