Mozart Sonata for piano and violin K 379 Perlman/Barenboim . Probably enough to send any ardent Hippite for a cold shower - but glorious playing to my ears.

Boccherini Guitar Quintet no2 in E.

Academy of St Martin in the fields. Pepe Romero.
Fascinating piece. Rather passed over this before, but has plenty to hold the attention, not least a spectacular number of moves into the minor and back !!

The 2nd half of the 125th anniversary concert of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam, with Mariss Jansons on the podium, leading Richard Strauss' Ein Heldenleben, their Zondagmiddagconcert:

Didn't wake up in time for the first half (something to do with Daylight Savings Time, I suppose), which was the world premiere of Mysteriën by Louis Andriessen, but will hopefully be able to catch it later on Dutch Radio 4's archives.

Finished listening to the complete Verdi box set earlier, to which I've been listening the past month. Quite a number of the operas I'd either never heard before or never heard complete. I found many of the earlier ones much better than I had anticipated and was particularly taken with I Due Foscari and also found Nabucco, Ernani & Macbeth (though in its later version) to be most enjoyable. Many middle period works were familiar and I still retain my love for Rigoletto and was quite impressed with Luisa Miller. Many of the later works I knew or had heard at least part of and Don Carlos has really grown on me, the revelation however was Simon Boccanegra (1881 version), especially the 1st and 3rd Acts which were absolutely superb. I still retain a soft spot for Aida and the Four Sacred Pieces, especially the Stabat Mater.

Overall a really enjoyable experience and a set I'm glad I took the opportunity to purchase.

Just given my late father's CD of Rutland Boughton's "The Immortal Hour" a spin; can't help but conclude that British audiences must have been blessed with considerably greater attention spans that I have!

In anticipation of my visit to Cardiff to hear his 9th Symphony live, I thought I'd listen over the next couple of weeks to all the Roy Harris works in my collection.

                              Roy Harris
Concerto for Clarinet, Piano & String Quartet 1926
                              Untitled Piece for Piano 1926
                              Piano Sonata 1928
                              Piano Sonata - original scherzo
                              String Quartet No 1 1929
                              Chorale for Strings 1932
String Quartet No 2 (Three Variations on a theme) 1932
                              Symphony No 1 'Symphony 1933'

Still amazed how a work like the 1st Symphony hasn't had a good modern recording.
