Karl Heinz Stockhausen: Gruppen for 3 Orchestras

Berlin Phil conducted by Bawdy Claude

I know that the composer didn't care for it, but I think it rocks. Shame about the cover though.. what were DG think of. Two big ears in concrete? And only 44 minutes of music, even for contemporary music is a bit short measure for a full price CD.

                  It's still wonderful stuff though...

I wonder too whether the performers have a say in the way their recordings are marketed (some seem to have, others obviously haven't)
Brilliant CD it is, but the artwork is not exactly appealing, is it?
The front of the LP of Gruppen (late 1960 DGG, now on an expensive Stockhausen Verlag CD) shows at least the orchestras in action....

Quite a work to spend a weekend immersed in... for more comments see my review on the CD Review thread.

The cat being inclined to climb up for cuddles mid-evening, I make sure there's good reading to hand and a disc in each transport; as JEG's 2012 Missa finished I noticed that the other disc was still spinning. Switching to it I found that it was Le Lac... it says much for its compelling, richly inventive beauty that I listened to the end.

I am pretty sure I have the Layton version, I know, definetly I have it non good old Naxos!

MrsBBM hasn't heard Christmas Vespers at Westminster Cathedral. So I have played or am p-laying this again, especially for her! It really just like being at the abbey where we go!

Earlier, Beethoven Op. 120 (Schiff/Brodmann), then (Cooper/Walter und Sohn), now (Staier/Graf).

I'd say that Schiff lets Beethoven tell the jokes, while Staier embellishes them, not always to the best service of the humour. Cooper ploughs a more even furrow. I find much to admire in each of them. Demus, Komen and Battersby to follow (all on Grafs or copies thereof).

By the way, I see the Demus double CD album is up for grabs (new) via the amazon.co.uk marketplace at £6.91 including p&p. Not listed under Beethoven, of course. You have to search for "diabelli demus"or "demus eloquence".
