Today - Louise Farrenc:
Overture No 1 in E minor op23
Piano Quintet No 2 in E op31
Cello Sonata in B flat op46
Variations Concertantes for violin & piano op20
Sextet in C minor for piano & wind op40
Piano Etudes op26 - nos 3, 4, 7, 8, 10, 12, 19, 22 & 30
Trio in E flat for Clarinet, Cello & Piano op44
Variations Brillantes on a theme of Donizetti for piano op15
Nonet in E flat major for String Quartet & Wind Quintet op38
Piano Trio in E flat major op33
Melodie in A flat major for piano
Symphony No 3 in G minor op36
Louise Farrenc's ouput concentrated on works for solo piano and chamber music and for me she is the finest woman composer of the 19th century. Her finest works are the chamber pieces which are imaginative and well written for the various chamber mediums. Extensive listening shows hints of the influence of a number of composers however Farrenc's style becomes more distinct the more you listen to her music. Her 3 symphonies are fine works showing excellent craftsmanship and a fair degree of depth.

Mrs. PG and I going to hear Vilda Frang play the Britten violin concerto with the RSNO tomorrow nite so listening to it in anticipation. Mislaid Ida Haendel disc () so listening to Maxim Vengerov with Rostropovich instead. It's ok but he's no Ida Haendel!
After some digging, found la Haendel. Amazing violin playing!
Accept no substitutes!

Today - Gabriel Faure:
Pelleas and Melisande - Incidental Music op80

Violin Sonata No 2 in E minor op108
Messe Basse
Barcarolle No 2 in G minor op41
Le Jardin Clos - song cycle op106
Piano Quintet No 1 in D minor op89
Masques et Bergamasques op112
Cinq Melodies de Venise op58
Impromptu No 3 in A flat major op34
Piano Trio in D minor op120
I enjoy quite a lot of Faure's music though there are a number of works I dislike such as the Requiem, Cantique de Jean Racine and Apres une reve. It is the Chamber works that I most admire especially the beautiful austerity of the later works such as the Piano Trio, I'm also rather fond of the D Minor Piano Quintet with its searching almost anguished expression. The songs and piano works are slowly growing on me and I was quite intrigued by Penelope which I would certainly like to return to.
