          Murray McLachlan.

          Inexplicably neglected music.

Mahler's 4th Symphony, BBC Symphony/Barbirolli live from Smetana hall Prague, 03.01.1967. A truly lovely performance with Heather Harper in glorious voice. I hear on the grape vine that the Barbirolli Society will be issuing a Mahler 1st from this same venue with JB conducting the Czech Philharmonic in Mahler 1. Can't wait!!

                            Today - Felix Mendelssohn:

String Symphony No 9 in C major 1823
                            Piano Trio No 1 in D minor op49 1839
                            Lieder Ohne Worte op19 1830
                            Overture: A Midsummer Nights Dream op21 1826
                            Organ Sonata in F minor op65 no1 1844
                            Six Anthems op79 1846
                            Piano Concerto No 2 in D minor op40 1837
                            Paulus - Part I op36 1836
                            String Quartet in F minor op80 1847
                            Cello Sonata No 2 in D major op58 1843
                            Octet for Strings op20 1825
                            Rondo Capriccioso op14 1824
                            Symphony No 3 in A minor 'Scottish' op56 1842

Mendelssohn is certainly one of my 'soft spot' composers and for me the greatest child composer prodigy, I find his early music far more accomplished than Mozart's at the same age. Whether he fulfilled his early promise entirely is often questioned. True there are some bland works from the later 1830's & 40's with Mendelssohn relying too much perhaps on key stylistic formulas, yet of course at the same times he was still composing masterpieces such as the F minor Quartet and the D major Cello Sonata, I'd forgotten how good this was before today, I was listening to a 'period' recording and although not always particularly keen on these it really brought out the energy and humour in the work and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The early Octet is still a favourite and I always marvel at the level of accomplishment in a boy of 16. I'm not so sure on works like Paulus, though I have to admit it grew a bit on me today, so it'll be worth another try of the full work in the not too distant future.

Do you know the string quintets and piano quartets ?,marvelous stuff IMO.
