    Why? Recorder query

Why does this recorder player hold his instrument at a peculiar angle. Is it a new style?

He seems to do this in several videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrRRTiwoGx8

I don't suppose it's an "approved" method. His choice, I expect.

His fingering style isn't great either - moving the fingers much too far from the holes.

Because an important element of what he's doing is the various percussive sounds he's making with his mouth. This is called beatboxing if you hadn't come across it before; skilled beatboxers can imitate the kinds of (partly electronic) percussion sounds used in contemporary dance music to a degree that's sometimes uncanny. In order to project and differentiate these sounds he has to hold the aperture of the recorder's mouthpiece away from his lips. The technique would severely limit what you can do with the recorder itself, but that isn't really the point - the instrument is only one component of what's going on musically.
