Tchaikovsky's 'Rococo Variations and Saint-Saëns 1st 'cello concerto.

      Han-Na Chang, 'cello.

The London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich.

      EMI.

Ms. Chang seems to have fallen off the circuit since I've not heard of her for a long time. (Well, apart from resigning as conductor of the Qatar Orchestra with no notice after they played a Prom concert). According to Wikipedia, she's now conductor of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and her 'cello playing appears to be on the back burner. That's a real shame since I heard her in Edinburgh with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and was absolutely bowled over. A truly wonderful player.

              Strauss: Don Quixote*

              [interval]

              Tchaikovsky: Symphony No 5

              Pierre Fournier (cello)*
              Berliner Philharmoniker
              Herbert von Karajan

A shameless steal of Barenboim's programme from last week and taken from the 1960s Karajan box. Alas, the Don competed with the noise of a barrage of fireworks round here. Sounded like a war-zone

                Frank Bridge
                String Quartets 2 and 3.

                The Bridge String Quartet.

I only recently bought a copy of these and the other 2 quartets. They certainly cut through the firework noise well enough.
One of those discs you just want to put on straight away. I don't know Bridge's chamber music at all really, but really thought these two works were excellent.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

                        OK, fair enough.

Earlier I was listening to Tasso by Liszt, ( well anything is better than the footy at the moment) and there is a bit in it which is just like a bit in the final movement of Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony.

I think at the time of their release they competed with Tortelier Kempe on EMI!
