I am not in a great position to judge, but I like this version a lot.

      Now -

Schubert - piano sonata in B major D 575, Klára Wuertz.

            Mahler Symphony 5
            Gurzenich Orchestra/ Franz Xavier Roth

Quite something this - I have at least 7 versions of this work, but having enjoyed what Roth has done with Stravinsky and Ravel, I had to sample this, and quickly had to buy it ! Lighter textures but no want of power, and the sheer amount of detail that's often masked is quite incredible. The finale in particular is fabulous, but all the movements have a forward momentum and lack of 'goo' (very musicological...) that's a joy to hear. Orchestral playing is absolutely first rate.

              Hiya Pianoman,

I'm not surprised you enjoyed the Mahler recording, François-Xavier Roth is a fine conductor. I recall him conducting so splendidly the SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg in Schoenberg ‘Pelleas and Melisande’ symphonic poem in 2015 in Berlin.

                Hiya Stanf,
I though you might like him and I see that Mahlerai has given a thumbs up (of sorts) on Musicweb - even Hurwitz gives a grudging welcome !

The earlier, not quite so cool recording.

Ah, yes thanks - I knew I’d read something about this disc but couldn’t think which thread! I really can’t stop playing it- each movement has a different illumination on a very familiar piece !
