    Johanna Müller-Hermann (1878-1941)

A composer completely new to me, who knew Alma Mahler and Alexander Zemlinsky. How come "we" have heard nothing of her up to this point? The write-ups have nothing to say about her musical style, so one is led to anticipate with baited breath.

Carola Darwin's article is helpful this respect and can be downloaded through the link on her website (https://www.caroladarwin.co.uk/research-writing/)

I think post Mahler a lot of the tonal Austrian composers like Zemlinksy and (non-film ) Korngold faded from view. Their careers were disrupted by war and their style became unfashionable. Her style is lush and chromatic. It’s all a bit too fin -de - siecle for me .It’s relatively unchallenging stuff , appealing to the ear but I’m not sure of its real quality. We’ll know more by the end of the week when we’ve heard a greater selection . I’m am not as struck by its quality as I was by Barbara Strozzi last week . She was a really considerable composer.

This piano piece is a bit too “morceau de salon” for me…
