    Advent Carols

I'm new to this so please be gentle.
But what is your favourite Advent carol?
Everybody has a Christmas favourite. But what would you like to hear next Sunday at a parish church or cathedral near you?

    O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
was always my favourite at School all those years ago.

More of a hymn and a dead cert to boot, but it it the one.

Otherwise Schonberg's Friede auf Erden, but that's me being ponsy!

Yes...I agree with secret squirrel about "Lo! he comes" ...and I'm looking forward to hearing the St John's College Advent Service broadcast from Sunday...

Other advent "carols" - 'oh come oh come Emmanuel' ...and I must admit to having a soft spot for "es ist ein Ros' entsprungen..."

Howells, A Spotless Rose. It sends shivers down my spine - if sung well.

Creator of the stars of night is the Advent evening office hymn, and I love singing it every evening. Es ist ein ros is surely a Christmas piece? (In Advent it won't have sprungen yet, would it?)

                Help!

You did nothing wrong - it was probably a bug which omits everything with an accent, plus everything that follows. For the present remove accents. We're working on a fix

Good thing is you can edit and copy it back in!

[I've now posted a sticky thread about it on the Announcements board.]

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Some of the Advent hymns mentioned here are versions of the plainsong 'O' antiphons, which have embedded themselves in the Advent service we get from John's every year (the rest of which will be there when DracoM posts the full versionof the Order of Service!)

                      I love them.

'Lo he comes' is bound to be popular in Japan, Iceland etc with all that "deeply whaling" sorry!

O Come, O Come Emmanuel, as arranged by Andrew Carter. The final verse has a quite incredible multivoice descant.

Such a wonderful celebration. Maybe my favourite service of the year.

My favourites? As others - O come, O come... and Lo! he comes...
