The Choir Sun 8th May 'Men in Choirs'

Aled Jones extols the splendours of men-only choruses in contrasting works by Wagner and Gavin Bryars, and he asks why British choirs often struggle to match their ranks of female singers with equal numbers of tenors and basses.

Ha, now there's a question - I await his answer with bated breath and everything crossed.....

There was a very cursory discussion of the issue. Didn't gain much insight, apart from the point about women having more of the melody. Is 'The Choir' always this superficial? - it's not a programme I normally listen to.

Having said that, the music was most enjoyable. The Gavin Bryars piece grew on me, though more the piano writing than the choral contributions which I felt added little. And the Wagner was wonderful - beautifully sung and articulated.
