This should be interesting, though it would be preferable if such archived programmes were in addition to, rather than instead of, live broadcasts.

And if the Keble College recording was being broadcast on Sunday 25th as he website seemed to indicate, then this really would have been in addition to a live (or at least specially recorded) broadcast.

But it's all been corrected now, and it seems that this archive recording is being repeated. I suspect the Keble recording is for Easter Day, as it contains Easter texts.

But what will be broadcast on Wednesday 28th, which is still Holy Week? The website isn't telling.

According to the Radio Times for next week, the office of Tenebrae will be broadcast from Westminster Cathedral ... LIVE!

            Two Catholic cathedrals in succession!

Tenebrae is here anticipated from Maundy Thursday. You can either do that, or postpone it until later in the morning of the day itself, which is what they do at the Oratory - you can't really have it in the middle of the night. This solution is more convenient from the live broadcast point of view!

We'll certainly get the strepitus (strepitum is the accusative singular)! It's usually made by slamming books. Here's an organ strepitus:

The strepitus (Latin for "great noise") is made by slamming a book shut, banging a hymnal or breviary against the pew, or stomping on the floor and symbolize...

One of the odd things about that service was that it came from a very specifically Catholic foundation, but frankly, it was as Anglican as it gets - or so it seemed to me in format, language and repertoire. Odd?

At lest the front line sounded like real children giving it a go!

And with pleasing results, from the bit that I heard.

In the past, they've always sounded 'Anglican' and made use of Anglican music, including (though not today) Anglican chant. Yes, there was a certain appealing fragility in the sound, though pitch was sometimes a problem. According to Wiki, the 'Wigwam' was completed in 1967, so the choir hadn't been going that long at the time of this CE recording.

I do wish the BBC wouldn't use second-rate organ music to fill the 15 minute gap at the end of these short CEs. Le Febure-Wely? When we could have had all manner of fine French composers to show off the Walker instrument. And we could have had the complete performance of O Mensch Bewein which was faded very quickly.

                          * I first had to play Le F-W's awful Sortie in E flat for a wedding about 50 years ago. And blow me, people kept asking for it. Well, if you want to get married to a Big Top Circus piece.....
