Having a scientific background, there is another meaning of meta in the sense of metastable or metamorphosis, that is an apparently stable state (caterpillar) which ultimately and inevitably slides into a more stable state (butterfly).
So that might more sense in the way Ferneyhough is using the term - but who knows?
