Freedom Jazz Dance, from Miroslav Vitous' Mountain in the Clouds of 1969 (not 1972, as stated on the link), with Joe Henderson, John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock and Jack DeJohnette really making explicit the tacit funk of the original on Miles Smiles in the bassist's arrangement:

Best to google the album title, as I can't make any of the alternative links work.

I love this tune and this performance (I posted it on the original post of the John McLaughlin thread IIRC).

Most grateful, thanks Joseph K. That whole album was on youtube a couple of years ago. Obviously "too good for the working man" as people used to say.

I first came across it in a record shop, sometime in the late 1970s, and, not having enough money at the time, it was a toss-up between it and another LP. In the end I chose Chick Corea's Tones for Joan's Bones.

I still miss those wet afternoons spent rifling through offerings in record shops.

Elvin Jones Quartet in 1973, consisting of hisself, Dave Liebman, Steve Grossman and bassist Gene Perla (who he?) - a very fine group; I don't know if they ever made a record: this number was slotted into one of Jezza's programmes in the late 90s, celebrating Elvin's 60th birthday, if I remember correctly.

Elvin Jones - drums; Dave Liebman and Steve Grossman - saxes; Gene Perla - bass; France 1973, stretching out on a Dave Liebman original... Thanx to Dan Adler...
