    RIP John Cumming (1948 - 2020)

I was sad to hear of the death of John Cumming, of Serious who died recently. I remember him particularly from the Gateshead Jazz Festival in previous years. He had a dry sense of humour and once introduced Tomasz Stanko as an icon of "natty headgear" in respect of his trademark cap. A very moving tribute by Ros Rigby is in London Jazz News

Always approachable at festivals, whenever you could purloin him between chance encounters with all the so many people he seemed to have dealings with and plans in the offing. Just from eavesdropping as one waited ones turn, one felt he was au fait with new developments in the music as soon as they happened, broadminded and sympathetic. I wonder if anybody ever got to sit him down and ask him about himself and his time at the organising side of the arts (as well as jazz). He would have been an invaluable fount of experience.
