    Jerry Lewis 1926-2017

Sad to read of the death of Jerry Lewis. Seems that the first film I ever saw was a Jerry Lewis film, the Three-ring Circus, so my Dad told me. I don't remember it but I do remember Saturday matinees of the likes of 'The Bellboy' and 'The Nutty Professor'. I suppose he was a bit of his time but you could see his influence on folk like Jim Carrey. He did have one further great outing, as the subject of Robert De Niro and Sandra Bernhards' obsessions in Scorcese's great movie 'King of Comedy'.

I remember him giving a Masterclass on a series (IIRC, Inside the Actors' Studio ) about fifteen years ago - he was full of gentle and funny advice and encouragement to the young actors in the class. It impressed me a lot more that the slapstick films which I've never liked - even as a small child, I found them noisy and a bit frightening (although I did enjoy The Nutty Professor a little later , when I was about ten). King of Comedy shows him at his not inconsiderable best, I thought.
