    Whistling bullfinches

Did anyone hear The Life Scientific on R4 today?

Listen about 18 mins 15 sec from the start. It's amazing.

Yes, I heard them and it was extraordinary. I had no idea that bullfinches could do this.

I had no idea ANY bird could do this. I didn’t listen to the end but does this mean that the bird who has learned to sing only sings and does not chirps as normal bullfinches do?

You hardly ever hear bullfinches sing in the wild - I can't remember when I ever have, and I lead dawn chorus guided walks. Normally all you hear is their soft, flutey, monosyllabic whistle as they keep in contact in the undergrowth, or when feeding in my garden
