yes, Leonin, the first significant composer of polyphony (hence "starting with... "): all that we know of him comes from "Anonymous IV" and his reference to the Magnus Liber...

SO - Ferneyhiccough found the Lion and Leoncavallo

Subcontra found Gretry / Richard Coeur-de-Lion and Leonin

    Flay identified L's Oedipus Re

I think it's a tussle between the Ferneyhiccup and Subcontra - MMMMMMM, who wd like to take it on??

... well, unless Ferneygeliebte or Subcontra want to claim first dibs - why not?

There's an American composer (new to me) called John Maus.

But you have saved the day, Norfy.

                  But not Micky

And not Maus. I had referred to vinny's last challenge.

The fable of the lion and the mouse?
                      Speedy Gonzales in Looney Tunes?

Nope. You got the Mouse that Roared - I'd like to see that film again. No more lions.

Where did that pop up from? A cunning edit eh?
You are trying too hard. The cartoon is musical.

Just wanted to say that having been out very late last night, I have just read through the last few pages since yesterday afternoon and enjoyed it hugely, great puzzles and I laughed out loud at Anna's "Coo! Virgins!" (or similar)

I do hope JFLL keeps throwing his or her hat in the ring!

And I do hope others who read here aren't put off by thinking they have to have compendious knowledge of the AA 'jurisprudence'!!! Not at all! The ability to remember what one had for breakfast is an advantage, but I don't think even that is essential!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Should he/she be made aware of the addictive qualities of AA? I chanced upon the board and the rest as they say.....

I wonder if the surrealist composer could be André Souris ??
