    The Y is YMCA, surely

Not as far as I'm aware, but I'd be happy to share your views. I suppose you could say that, in one case at least, I've tried to come up with something completely different.

mercia: Yangtse (or Yangtze) is indeed the link. You're presumably referring to his 'Amethyst March'. Would you care to take us further?
Ammy: I couldn't work out the YMCA link, was all I meant.
A clue: you might well find David and friends on their knees.

Twas ever the prerogative of genius to be misunderstood, ammy!!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                  unable to at present
so we need musical connections between Yangtse and Michael Palin and two people surnamed William, one a composer, the other a saxophone player

Michael Palin was involved in the Monty Python song "We Love the Yangtze".

not sure if I've misunderstood this

David [...........] shares a surname with another English composer, whose surname was William
is that two people surnamed William ?

I suspect a minor cock-up in the clue - David William, saxophonist draws blanks, as does compser with surname william! Plaese can you clarify, Norfy?

Sorry - your suspicion is well-founded! The saxophonist's first name is David, and his surname is shared with an English composer whose first name is William. ('Y' did I not go straight to 'A' ? )
                              Two correct answers thus far:
Leigthon Lucas composed the 'Amethyst March' for the film 'Yangtse Incident' (part of which, incidentally, was filmed near here), and there is indeed a Monty Python song entitled 'We Love The Yangtse'.
