Is the 'concerto that dies' named as a concerto or as a tone poem?

Richard Strauss' Don Quixote dies at the end

He also wrote a tone poem Symfonia Domestica that isn't a symphony.

                hercule,

You are quite correct with Schnittke.

He does indeed have a Symphony No 0, but I was referring to his description of the Symphony No 1 as an Anti-Symphony. The 9th is unfinished in that it was reconstructed by Raskatov, who believed that there might have been a planned 4th movement. Schnittke's friend and biographer Alexander Ivashkin, however, believes the three movement work to be complete in itself.

Now... the wordless choral work and the concerto that dies...

Perhaps the Concerto for Mixed Chorus which is based on The Book of Lamentations?

                      Voices of Nature, yes.

The Concerto for Mixed Chorus is a good answer, though not the one I had in mind. The composer and the work's dedicatee both suggested that the work ended with the death of the solo instrument. Which concerto though?

hmm, death? Wish I could do cryptic and/or lateral thinking. Au secours!

It's quite literally minded. The orchestra becomes increasingly belligerent towards the end of the work and stages a series of assaults, from which the solo instrument, like a tender flower (clue) collapses and dies... what a pansy!

                            Pansy: Viola?
(Should this be the missing element to the answer - and the description that I've just read of the work suggests that it might be, I do not consider my marginal contribution to be enough to allocate the next question to me. Can Hercule not be persuaded to set it? I've returned to the fray now that the feverish outburst of foul language and messages in Welsh appears to have passed).

Yup. The Viola Concerto, dedicated to Yuri Bashmet.

Well done hercule, Pianorak and Ofca. s all round

Now, where do we go from here? hercule, for solving the original clue?

I couldn't agree more. Reminded me of trying to read my water bill....until I realised that English was on the other side.
