Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

It ought not to be : the one unbreakable rule in crossword puzzles is that the clue must not contain the word that is being sought - and the original clue, way back at #17039, was "An F to link 4 divas". So 'four' ought to be out of bounds...

But I have a sneaking suspicion it might be / Anonymous 4 ???

It is a play on words which revels a name - of a composer.

                Could it be...

You have a strange, twisted mind, Cloughie. I like your style

Quite clearly, our dear vinmousseux had solved it and was savouring the result before i blundered in. As I have set a few lately, and I would like to have another crack at solving: Monsieur V - would you consider being so kind as to set the G?

... if you say so - I shall go away and ponder a G.

But I still want to know what happened to those divers...

The 4 A were a means to an end but I had in mind

                          Arleen Auger
                          Ann Murray
                          Alice Coote
                          Angela Ghiorghui

Mrs C put the idea in my head so blame her!
