    Ok, I'll have another crack:

    Sackbut? (I nearly typed butcrack...)

    Sack= differrent sherry
    But= conjunction
    The Sackbut was an 'early' trombone

      Bang. Nail. On the head.

      Sack is an early word for sherry and conjoined with the conjunction 'but' is indeed that early slide instrument you mention.

      From sherry-sack to T...
      "...the isle is full of noises,
      Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
      Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

        What T was first heard in 1809, or 1917... or 1926?

              One minute it's all Corrie, and the next you're answering the question... such a display of multi-tasking I have rarely encountered outside the female of the species!
              Well done, Ofca. All correct. Over to U, if you can think of one...

                  After a struggle, I've come up with the following:
                  What U is, to a certain extent, nowhere?

                          Well I missed the chance for a go at U thanks to 'Ercule's Little Grey Cells...

                          Will cogitate on V while cycling! For the moment it seems utterly impenetrable

                          Thursdays are usually good for rubbers so he'll probably have solved it by the time I get back online

                                makes sense but my V 'scenario' is not specific to this couple (if that helps)
