    DOUBLE EDIT:
The Brit was ennobled during his stint.
The Finn has been in post since 2003.

I think my first look at this I was thinking composers
but I guess we're after conductors or maestros
haven't really got time to research just now

I also thought maestro but wiki only lists six conductors.

When does a conductor become a maestro anyway ?

Music director of somewhere or other and the current incumbent is a Finn?

Oramo was Music Director of the CBSO in 1999 and stepped down in 2008 which is 9 years but doesnt really fit with 'and counting'...a Finn

Ozawa was musical director of the San Francisco Symphony from 1969 to 1976 which is 7 years.. a Japanese

Haitink ...I can only find a stint of 10 years and not 9

Sir Mark Elder ?? Sir Charles Davis ?

Sorry, none of the above. However, one of the two orchestras which you mention is in the same country as M. (Who's Sir Charles Davis, out of interest? )

Very good question, v good answer in the early hours!

                          I should have got that
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
