      But..

What Y is connected by a West Coast singer/songwriter, formed a group that recorded music by Thelonius Monk and a piece of equipment that might help you listen
Going to need some more clues, RM, stp...

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Surely the piece of equipment is your ears ...ah, that wouldn't work for anybody else, would it ...my ears, her ears...might it be a year trumpet (as pronounced in an around the Forest of Dean, perhaps)?

Our West Coast singer/songwriter hails from my favourite US city - San Francisco.

The man who formed the group to record music by Thelonious Monk is also a pianist and composer. Born in the 1930's.

I'm not sure that's narrowed the field that much, old chap!

I know I should have gone to A!

Our West Coast singer is a bit curt and the other chap was born in 1932 and is Japanese and provided scores for 250 Japanese films.

As for the technology, well an aerial view might help.

Are we looking for one of the apparently innumerable members of the Yamamoto clan?

                  No I'm afraid not.

I was going to suggest "Ono! This is all my fault!" but Yoko ain't a "chap"!

One of those answers which (if correct) confirms my initial impression that I had 0% chance of getting this one!

Sadly only possible with the last set of clues guiding the internet searches.

Shall we round off this cycle with a Masonic (according to some) Z to link Handel and Rameau?
