Not a million miles away from your L, this M.... rapidly uniting a wanderer, apparently, with three versions of an Anglo-German sounding dance....
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Summer doldrums... or general puzzlement... ?

A little late-night clue. The link between this M and Flay's L for Lasses can be summed up as: all Ms are Lasses, but not all Lasses are Ms.

Your wish was my command even before you posted.

                    A lass's (?lass'? - ??las's???) name perhaps?
An Anglo-German Dance in 3/4 perchance?
                    One with antipodean connections, mayhap?

No ferney, the 'lass' means straightforwardly the female of the species...

A clue... well the wanderer is perhaps... roaming

And the word 'rapidly' is a direct clue to one of the elements. Find a synonym.

                          ... so, not "Mathilda", then?

("Waltz" the Anglo for the Germanic "Walzer"; the "jolly swagman" was a "wanderer" ...)

I was going to suggest the Oberkirchen Children's Choir ('I Love to Go a Wandering / Along the Mountain Track'), but sadly that doesn't have an 'M' in it (except the one in 'Mountain')

Not Mathilda, no... You're not after a name...

The dance is older than the waltz. It 'sounds' German because that's what its name means...
