RM this was a tester. I think I've found the answer: Job.

Parry's oratorio by that name was premièred in Gloucester Cathedral during the 1892 TCF.

RVW's version ('A Masque for Dancing') gave me problems, as it was premièred in London - but then I found that was the danced version. Its concert version was premièred in Norwich at the Festival there in 1931

Petr Eben wrote a "Job" but that's too late.

            More work to do...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                  So:

                  Job - Parry - Gloucester 1892
                  Job - RVW - Norwich 1931
                  Job - Dallapiccola - Rome 1950

I have a modest K for the nightwatchmen / early risers.

It links sisters, comedians and young lovers.

Not as straight forward a King, surely?

King Lear, King of Comedy! And The King and I (Hello, Young Lovers)?

(But is the word "modest" a clue?)

No - not King. And no - modest isn't a clue.

                      Other than that: terrific, Flay!

I thought there was a comedians overture - but wiki says it's a suite

well done on Job, I found the Norwich one but couldn't find any others - so gave it up as a bad job

                                That's a suite-sounding idea... Stick with that...

RM's not a million miles away with his 'lovers' guess, either. (The Norns on the other hand are nothing to do with it.)
