        OK

we're after five consecutive conductors of a European orchestra, based in a city with porcelain/china connections, also World War II bombing connections

        Fritz Reiner 1914-21
        Fritz Busch 1922-33
        Karl Bohm 1934-43
        Karl Elmendorff 1943-44
        Joseph Keilberth 1945-50

the city's name begins with D and is in Saxony

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.

                Dresden Opera House ...the Semperoper.

                Good clue!

I did think about conductors but didn't get very far.
