not being thick anton - I'm afraid it's a cryptic clue Alwyn's wife was Dorthy Carwithen, who was also a composer

Be a good fellow and give us the answer to the first two clues for a sensational coleslaw and then give use a B

Far too subtle for a coal in the bath person

Alwyn studied the Piccolo in Norfampton and wrote scores such as The Black Tent and the Crimson Pirate......

If that allows me a B then

A composer with a mind that impressed a visiting Wagner
        Chateau Thames Embankment
        Dies Natalis

It would be remiss indeed if I did not pick that up as a reference to one of Rumpole's tipples, along with its second vin Chateau Fleet Street, at Pommeroy's.

But a B... I wondered if the Bailey connection led to a performer of Dies Natalis (Isobel Bailey? No...); which in turn made me think of Wilfred Brown.... but at this late hour I can't find a way to link it all up, so shall leave it to sharp early morning brains

            is B a composer ?

I can vaguely make Boyd fit parts 2 and 3 of the question

are we looking for three people who share the same name ?

I wonder if the Wagner in question isn't Richard but a member of the extended family

I don't think Finzi's is the only Dies Natalis

Sorry of course you are right and I understand you had Sunday CD Essentials Masters Classics to "do". The delay in my responding is much more mundane - taking down Christmas.......
