Mercia'll be in bed by now I suspect

You can use the 'Edit Post' facility to replace 'Lavishly' with 'Devilishly' you know...

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

if D is a composer, I can vaguely offer Dibdin or Drigo - the risenman's hints seem to point to the word devil

not sure how I go about looking for an opera with a very long title and syphilitic composers seem to be two-a-penny

musically, Harlequin takes me to Schumann, Busoni, Stockhausen, Strauss, Arne and probably several more

            No

The syphilitic composer is/was not an actual living person.

an appearance in a very long opera title
Is this the title of a very long opera, or a very long title of an opera?

I expect I should have known this already, however, Adrian Leverkuhn is apparently the syphilitic composer in Doctor Faustus

                  thinks

I wonder if D will be Doktor

                  welcome back Doktor Flay

Indeed. Where'd you get to, north of the border?

I think you have a computer glitch RM - repeat messages....

The was a Drury Lane pantomime in the 18th Century called "Harlequin Doctor Faustus"... http://www.abebooks.com/Harlequin-Do...on/29380778/bd

I suspect that's not what's on the card though
