Well the Offenbach is used in the soundtrack to Woody Allen's "Midnight in Paris"...

... and the Mendelssohn 'Venetian' Gondola Songs in the 'Songs without Words' ?

It is indeed. Not wishing to drag this out: the other unlikely bedfellow using the Offenbach Barcarolle is Sorabji in his Passeggiata Veneziana (hence "strolled" and "passageways" as it means both in Italian).

Exit to a Can-Can from Caliban?

You've stucken your pin in the right spot on the AA musical map, cloughie! (Long time no see! Good summer? )

Yup - the two gentlemen were directors of music of the Cincinnati Symphony which gave the US première of Mahler 5

                D-cidedly impressive, Mr C

I don't think so but there are two American links one of which involves the frequent misuse of a certain overture.

Shame, I assumed that as it was a cloughie question it wouldn't be Maurice Ravel!

I had Bruno Ravel in the rock group Danger Danger, also Jim and possibly Daniel Danger

Bling + misuse of an ourverture (William Tell in the Lone Ranger) = Johnny Depp (I know it's not it, just an indication of how far away I am).

Hi ho - a French overture - and a composer who revered Ravel.
