Not sure, despite him repeating himself rather often, I couldn't understand it!

Nothing at all Cloughie - concentrate on the middle bit I think, given your broad tastes in music

not an obscure reference to a recording of Mozart K351 by Rita Streich ?

Who wrote Three Tales, and whose ensemble included percussionist and sound engineer Paul Zinman.
David Zinman recorded Torke's Ecstatic Orange ("tangeine"-ish) and Mahler's Seventh Symphony which includes a part for mandolin (played on the recording by Rita Scuttersthwaite?)

Up to there is 100% correct. My "I couldn't understand it" was a fairly heavy hint, to the particular Tale or story in question. Methinks ferneyhg knows it!

It's also definitely to be found in Rita's Mandolin (nearly wrote mandarin ). This is a little more obscure, but not to me as I know the composer from years ago at The Institute of Sonology

News to ferneyhg ... I thought (Ms Scuttersthwaite aside) Zinman was in the right region. But

... seems to be a clue: are we associating Rita's mandolin with Orpheus' lyre?

no it's not really a clue. If you were to google Rita and mandolin you'd get a lot further. Or you could look at the titles within the Tale in question. Or tangerine - without the dream - might be found in someone's "portfolio of compositions" within the prog rock genre? If no-one comes up with the right answer next round I'll give a more weighty clue.......

Hmmm ... so not Peter Zinovieff, either.

The Three Tales are "Bikini", "Dolly" and "Hindenburg" ... no immediate z comes to mind ... ?
