    sorry anton, no idea, wondered if it might be quartet but I don't know why

        a-ha! big clue, thank you. yes I had read that Brahms owned some Haydn manuscripts, turns out he owned Schubert 12 too. was he a little light-fingered ?

          ..... so that's Schubert's D701 Quartettsatz which despite being just the one movement plus 41 bars, counts as his 12th quartet, manuscript owned by Brahms. a hard act to follow - well the 13th eventually did three years later ?

            Superb as always mercs I think Wiki mentioned the theory that FS never continued with it as he couldn't match the first movement........
