    Je n'aime pas les plaisanteries, non plus que les choses s'en approchant. Que prouve une plaisanterie ?

    La Grande Histoire du Monde en relate fort peu de remarquables. Il est rare qu'une plaisanterie puise sa source aux gracieuses entrailles de la Beauté ; mais il est certain qu'elle sort bien souvent des aisselles infectes de la Méchanceté.

    Aussi, je ne plaisante jamais ; et ne puis-je que vous conseiller d'en faire autant

    Une des plaisanteries les plus sottes qui soient venues à la connaissance des hommes est, je crois, celle qui eut pour but le Déluge. Il est aisé de voir combien cette plaisanterie fut grossière et inhumaine, même à son époque ; aussi bien que l'on constate qu'elle n'a absolument rien prouvé, et que la Philosophie n'en a été augmentée d'aucune manière.

    Évidence : Par cela, il apparaît, sur les délicieux sommets de la Raison, que la Plaisanterie n'est qu'un Art inférieur qui ne se doit pas enseigner, qui ne se peut magnifier, quelque en soit son titre, quelque en soit la fin que l'on se propose.

        In Berlin one was a founding flautist, another was a Royal Academy department founder (did he fiddle it?).
        The third was a Polished Italian who made a brilliant hunter
