2.5p = sixpence, which for no good reason has taken me to Kipps. Tartare composers takes me to Rossini, Ferrari and Marais. Father & son Abel were from Kothen.

That one's already been discounted but I like your scattergun for the rest - we'll see if it has hit when ferney's had his lunch! Kipps was a threepenny bit (Equivalent)

Writing as I eat - nobody yet has mentioned the special K, although I like the Half-a-Sixpence idea (but think pfennigs rather than pence). Someone who, undeservedly, gave his name to two masterpieces of 19th Century Western Culture (but neither of which he actually wrote).

Embarrassed Postscript: err ... and it should be 4.2 "pennies" rather than the 2.4 that got stuck in my mind. Apologies.

Now, now - it's not Doctor Who!

(I'm leaving for a concert by M Bivouac in about an hour, so if anyone wishes to admit that they know the answer before then ...

Well I think mercia was the first get there. I was calculating pfennigs pretty early on but didn't get it until merc's intervention. Yet another obscure fount (or font) of trivia gained!

Feeling a bit self conscious though - just looked at the statistics on this thread - well over half a million views, more than any other thread on this forum!!!

...... still can't link Kreuzer to Abel or Tartare, nor to whichever was the third clue in the original question ......

                              This might help:

(go to "L" for thr Tartare source)
