once you know what a whimbrel is I think you'll be away
A whimbrel is a large wading bird. It has longish legs and a long bill that curves near the tip. It is brownish above and whitish below. In flight, it shows a white 'V' shape up its back from its tail. In other words, no idea

A curlew? But that is not an R. So, I retire and leave it to others to solve.

Edit: Dennis and Carl - River Song ?

does the word curlew with another word beginning with R remind you of a musical work? I'm not sure there is anybody else around playing this game.

Him. I know it curlew does not begin with R but it does lead to Curlew River and Dennis and Carl did issue River Song. Am I getting in to water which is too deep?

                    so R = River

                      Now which Mrs Wood.?

Hi mercia, I felt I should take a bit of a break today and get involved in something out in the big wide world, instead. This site is really very addictive and one needs self-control which most of you seem to have developed already.

HI Anna, I still have not managed to lay my hands on a French Fancy. They appear to be in short supply in Liverpool.

Oh well, no idea about Teddy. Angle has it, well done, I am offline now.

mercia, |I find it necessary for self-preservation on some occasions but generally it has always been my intention to grow old disgracefully. A few other"self-"s spring to mind, the principal being self-indulgence.

Why are you not completing R? I have nothing in mind for S, and it is getting dark.

This R has been my question, I have been providing clues to help others finish it off.

I'm afraid you have done enough to set the S question, once we have just tidied up this conductor's wife (with her Russian-sounding name) and what musical work was written in her memory.
