Element 3 of the question is I think the viol or viola-da-gamba... But I'm dashed if I can find an exponent of the same involving an "I"

    More thought required!

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Sergei Istomin plays the viola de gamba. Isn't there a famous trio including another Istomin and a Rose?

While we wait for the ponderings to bear fruit, can I say thanks to vinteuil for the Fanning Island links. We have only recently traced this person who is part of the more adventurous side of the family. Checking the passenger lists we've found that his passage there was paid for by Pacific Cable.

Erm, no I don't think I saw that cake, only the iced one. I can rustle up anything you want of course! (In the culinary department)

                                (a) was a Northern songbird; (b) confidently predicted the arrival of a cargo vessel; and (c) was laid to rest in a famous London cemetery, to be joined by her husband barely 2 years later. Two of the three existed in real life. What J do they share?
