I'm sorry, but you've completely lost me now. Time to make way for The (Other) Master!

I've never heard Anna called that before

Come on Ofca, I know you can do this, you're already a third of the way there!

I seem to be on the wrong scent in the wrong forest. Thank you for your encouragement, but I genuinely have no idea. Ebony > herd >elephant?

what I want to know is how you get Woody Herman from "first herd"

Because he was First, Second and Third Herd etc., of course. Leading various groups under the name of The Herd

For the first clue, Woody Herman's band was First Herd for whom the piece was written.

The second clue also relates to a band.

And the third should be blindingly obvious...

I need to disappear for an hour after which I trust this will all be solved

I've been totally lost for the last few hours dipping in and out quickly between work duties. Haven't got the available spare brain cells for AA today, just for the odd quip or mordant remark

However, Rubbers is usually at his most fertile on Wednesdays and Thursdays I've noticed so there's plenty to keep everyone interested...
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Oh, I approached the wrong tree again! Just ignore that last posting. Somehow, I thought we were on to Herds of Elephants!
