    ... o well done!

I think for the fullness of answering, and for the two-out-of-threeness, the L shd go to the rubbernecker - unless the mercian one wants to put in a rapid claim of priority for having identified Kent as the word?? What do either/both of you think (don't be shy)?

      I quite agree
have I made another mistake with the archives? I'm sure I remember Kent before but I don't see it on the list

I would have been struggling to find a footing without the obvious Kent hint from Mercia. For that, and for solving the most obscure of the three lemmata (love this word) the Laurels clearly should go to Mercia

Oh dear, we disagree. Leaving aside the question of who sets L, no, there has been no mistake with Kent. In the early days of this thread Subcontrabass used to titillate us with many Kentish references: Alfred Deller and Invicta spring to mind, and I think Maestro Nagano has cropped up too; but we've never had Kent as the 'ackshal' answer. So well done Vinteuil for spotting that particular lacuna (love that word too)!

              Ok, I relent.

What L connects an ensemble associated with a 1984 Proms first, a Faustian duet, and The Shining?

Groan... Well if one of you fine gentlemen would like to step up to the plate and provide the details, we can swiftly move on.

Unless you want to leave it for one of 'les autres'...

Probably Lontano, but may be Ligeti.

I'd stick with the first, although the Shining takes in both.

I'm happy to pass the baton on to you for M

Odaline de la Martinez was the first female conductor at the Proms in 1984. The group she conducted is called Lontano.

"Mefistofele", Atto terzo: Lontano, lontano, (Faust, Margherita) - (Boito)

Ligeti's Lontano for large orchestra (1967) is used in Kubrick's film The Shining.

                              Now for M.

Back in a few hours perhaps.
