I'm sure you can make the final push mercia... Would you like to explain your thinking thus far ?
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

well Wisley and Harlow Carr are gardens, specifically RHS (are you a member?), or even "Country Gardens"
Gabriel Oak, the shepherd, if he was greeting someone would do a "Shepherd's Hey"
but I really don't know my Rosenkavalier . I'll have another look through Percy's catalogue.

Spot on so far - typically precise, no rambling...!

No, not an RHS member. Not really into gardens, to be honest. I like parks though

The clue was earlier in my answer

I think Caliban was rambling on the Rosenkavalier love duet...

which all goes to strengthen Mercia's Grainger answer...

do Sofie & Octavian do a lot of walking?

or rambling rose, Rosenkavalier, Grainger's mother was Rose

Percy Grainger wrote an elaborate and complex piano transcription of a theme from this opera. The Ramble on the Last Love Duet in Der Rosenkavalier is one of Grainger's more complex piano transcriptions, with many sumptuous ornamentations and harmonic twists and turns.

oh thanks, V, I was totally unaware of that work (no mention of it in wiki - on which I depend)

ah, I now see that reference at the bottom of the Rosenkavalier page

Cor! What a piece! Many thanks, vints - I've just played it twice & can feel myself slipping into a diabetic coma

Bravo mercia for getting it and to Caliban for setting it - and to MAH for playing it

The piece would be wonderful except for the fact that PG inserts an extra leading note at the end of the second phrase of the melody, impossibly naff, for me... makes it sound like the "Christ... mas" of "I'm dreaming of a white Christmas" Such a shame - if he'd just kept the tune as is, I would adore this transcription.
