is it a specific cartoon we should be thinking of?

      Dear me.

      Humperdinck?

His Hansel and Gretel was the first Metropolitan radio broadcast.
Babes in the Wood (based on Hansel and Gretel) is one of the Silly Symphonies.
      Rob Reiner -

The Princess Bride, directed by Reiner, features a character called Prince Humperdinck.

Well done! I think the god of the forest has the next letter. I resisted the temptation to throw William Golding into the mix. The book on which Reiner's film is based is also ludicrously convoluted.

OTOH it'd have been far too easy if i'd mentioned pop music, added to which i don't know much about that.

Dave. I think I for one would have been even more perplexed had you thrown pop or Golding into the mix!

And grateful thanks to mercia, without whose targeted probings I would still be all at sea.

              An "I" may follow shortly...

Cracking work by Taps. I spent 20 minutes this am trying to solve this, without success.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                  Caliban,

I have been dipping in and out of this problem for a good part of the day and the penny only dropped a short time ago...

Still reeling from the perplexities of H, my befuddled mind can merely muster the following:

An "I" to connect works by Tennyson, Wagner and Lully.

And the only thing my feeble brain can muster is 'Idyll'...

Apart from the obvious Wagner: Lully: L'Idylle sur la Paix, Tennyson: Idylls of the King

A long time, indeed, Taps and I have greatly missed your, or rather Henrik's, welcoming scowl...
