Little imagination here, ams though I will go straight to A if I may:

Which miniscule A links an English river, the soubriquet of a 1980s pop band frontman and a subtitled symphony by Kalevi Aho?

I think I'd better await official confirmation, but I have a 'B' prepared. (A bee following an ant - ho!ho!)

Excellent work, Norfolk Born, old (Ofca)chap

March of the Ants from the Insect Symphony, and a scintillating work it is too.

                    B...

The most recent was born in Kiev. Four earlier holders of the same post were born, respectively, in Vienna, Bucharest, Helsinki and Manhattan. Which B appointed them?

Being a bear of little brain, could I just clarify the order of appointment : Is it Kiev, Vienna, Bucharest etc? Or is it Kiev, Manhattan, Helsinki etc?

                        Thanking you

Vienna, Bucharest, Helsinki, Manhattan, Kiev are where these people started off, so to speak. The linking B is in another country.

                            Is it Bournemouth?

Some time later .... I'm off to ma bed!

                              Indeed, it IS Bournemouth!

                                Oh goody, Ofca!

I think it's Bournemouth because the clues refer to the birthplace of principal conductors of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra:

                                Kiev - Kiril Karabits

Manhattan -Andrew Litton and/or Marin Alsop

                                Helsinki - Paavo Berglund

                                Bucharest - Constantin Silvestri

                                Vienna - Rudolph Schwarz
