Correct, DS. As it was an easy question, for full marks you will need to explain how the third word of the clue relates to the answer.

Oh, I didn’t think. Can I pass the next question to someone else? I jumped in forgetting the rule. I shan’t do it again.

[ed] Beethoven’s violin sonata dedicating to Kreutzer, which inspired Tolstoy. Janacek gave the title to his string quartet No.1

Hang on, DS! You haven't broken any rules, you can give your reasoning afterwards. I'm just going to be a bit pernickety and and ask for a fourth element in addition to the identification of the three works

The rule I had forgotten was that you (I) would have to set the next question (I only like answering questions )

Unfortunately it doesn't work like that. You answer, you set. It's a shame you say you don't want to set the next question as we could sure do with some fresh faces around here! I suppose in this case I could release you from your obligation and award it to the person who completes the answer...

As so often when I can complete crosswords that others have largely completed, might the answer lie in the loaded verb 'sounds'...? as in suonare.... hence 'sonata' ... ??
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Well done, Caliban. But it seems Doversoul has now snitched the baton once again and given us an L

Yes eyes down for a stageful of countertenors.

Not at all, my little afterthought was totally undeserving! Yours looks like a perfectly good question to which I am applying my mind. Very good to have a new brain engaged here.

Doversoul, you now appear to have deleted your L question

EDIT: As I recall, Doversoul's question was: what L connects a pope, flourishing art and a stage full of countertenors?

I have. I messed the thing up so much that I thought it would be better if Caliban took up the L. Think before you jump indeed…

Oh, this time lag!! Yes, that was how my question was.

So, to resume: we are focussing on doversoul's excellent question:
What L connects a pope, flourishing art and a stage full of countertenors?
Very good question - ungooglable and teasing! I am flummoxed for the moment...
