I just think, no one wants to set the next puzzle and be on duty over Christmas Day!

To put people out of their misery and puzzlement, Gabriel Charpentier is the composer of A Tea Symphony, 'a kitsch opera in nine drinks'. According to Grove this is part of a collection called A Night at the Opera. This page (http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.c...=U1ARTU0000674) gives a different title to the collection.

I think the next question goes to antongould, who got things started on this one. I, for one, will be quite happy for the next question not to appear until Monday or Tuesday.

Wow scb, that was one of the great puzzles in AA history

I wonder if anton will give us an Xmas U...

Time for a glass of sherry all round I think..

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

An 'opera in nine drinks' was as close as I could get to offering some seasonal cheer.

              Faure Ballade
              Franck Violin Sonata
              Saint-Saens Violin Sonata

Back from Xmas visitation, family packed off to bed... but no idea springs to mind about this apart from: it's nothing to do with Vincent d'Indy is it?

                  Saint-Saens wrote two violin sonatas
The Franck gets played on other instruments e.g. viola and 'cello

oops, just remembered that these three works are possible contenders for the Vinteuil Sonata in Proust's a la recherche .......

                  V = Vinteuil

perhaps I should have let our esteemed friend answer this

OH well done mercia!!! Do you know, in the Xmas hurly-burly, having read the question, the thought passed through my mind (i.e. in and out ) without me connecting to a "V"

                      Well done to your synapses!

... might we also add Brahms' First Symphony?
